 VACANCY NOTICE  -  POST OF COORDINATING DIRECTOR

Applications are invited from suitably qualified Caribbean nationals1 for appointment to the post of Coordinating Director, Caribbean Meteorological Organization (CMO), based at the Organization’s Headquarters located in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.  CMO is a specialized institution of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), serving 16 English-speaking Caribbean Member States in Meteorology, Operational Hydrology and Allied Sciences.  CMO provides support and advice to Caribbean governments for the development of their Meteorological and Hydrometeorological Services and in addressing issues of an international nature affecting weather, water and climate. 

Qualification and Training:

A minimum of an honours degree in meteorology or a related atmospheric science with a minor in meteorology.  Relevant advanced degree(s) would be an advantage.  Proven management skills with significant experience at the international level would be an advantage.

This is a very senior and highly responsible scientific and administrative post within the CARICOM structure and is the CMO’s principal link to the regional and international community.

The climate modelling and analysis group based in the department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo, Canada invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) research position in modelling of snow-land-climate interactions and their response to climate change. The PDF will be engaged in two projects. The first involves the implementation and analysis of a suite of global land surface model simulations using the Community Land Model (CLM) to assess the impact of snow process parameterizations on climate. The second project involves the analysis of the CMIPx suite of model output to characterize projected land surface hydrological responses to climate change and their impact on the frequency and intensity of future drought in Canada. The position is partially supported by CanSISE (<http://www.cansise.ca>), a Canada-wide network of researchers from academia and government, engaged in climate modelling efforts related to quantifying sea ice and snow evolution. The position will involve collaboration internally within the research group at Waterloo, and externally with colleagues in CanSISE, at Environment and Climate Change Canada (<https://www.ec.gc.ca>), and at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (<http://www.agr.gc.ca/>).

Essential requirements: the PDF must have (or be about to obtain) a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, or a related field. Experience analysing and visualising large climate/geophysical datasets, preferably in netCDF format, using a scientific programming language such as Python, IDL, Matlab, or NCL in a Linux computing environment. The PDF will be a highly effective oral and written communicator, and be able to work as part of a research team. 
Desirable requirements: Experience running simulations with global or regional models of the atmosphere and/or land surface would be a distinct advantage, particularly with any of the NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) suite. Knowledge of advanced multivariate statistical methods, and/or statistical learning techniques such as support vector regression would also be an asset.

The position has an anticipated start date of September 5, 2017, or as soon as possible after that date. TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN PHYSICAL CLIMATE SCIENCE http://scmo.ca/client/career/careerDetail.html;jsessionid=16585C0D89D3702EAA0F94C78D26B7E9?careerId=339 The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in Physical Climate Science, to commence as early as July 2018. We seek applicants with research investigating climate processes relevant to understanding anthropogenic climate change, who work with large-scale (global and/or regional) climate models or data. The ideal candidate will collaborate with SEOS faculty through overlapping interests in, for example, ocean circulation and mixing, biogeochemical cycles, paleoclimate, or natural climate variability. Excellent opportunities also exist for collaborative research with scientists associated with the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis, the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium, and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, which are located on campus, and the nearby Institute of Ocean Sciences. SEOS emphasizes an Earth Systems Science approach, and the ideal candidate will be able to interact broadly with faculty who specialize in solid-earth, earth-surface, ocean and atmosphere processes.

The successful candidate will develop a vigorous, independent, externally-funded research program that complements existing strengths in SEOS. It is also expected that the candidate will supervise graduate students and teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to climate/atmospheric science, and actively contribute to departmental initiatives. A PhD is required at the time of appointment and post-doctoral experience is desirable. Commensurate with their career stage, qualified candidates must have an excellent record of research published in or in preparation for leading scientific journals. Effective teaching and student supervision are expected, supported by evidence which may include past experience, references, a teaching statement (see below), and the presentation of a candidacy seminar.
